The Mars Volta

Los Angeles, CA (April 11, 2025) – To mark a significant sonic milestone in their avant-garde and ongoing evolution, The Mars Volta released their ninth concept album “Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio.” The 18-track album is a sonic masterpiece that takes the listener on an atmospheric journey from start to finish. Composed and written by Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the duo reintroduces and simultaneously reinvents their musical essence to their beloved audience. They also announced their upcoming 25-city North American tour that will kick off in Dallas, TX, on October 25.  Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 18 at 10 AM local time at www.themarsvoltaofficial.com

The Mars Volta’s captivating instrumental diversity shine throughout the complex album, which is best heard continuously from start to finish and without interruptions. “Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio” blends the duo’s signature sound with jazz and electronica influences, celebrating their origins while pushing forward with fresh innovations — a musical journey that’s both nostalgic and new. The conceptual album spans multiple genres, giving their listeners a taste of Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala’s curated yet distorted mind full of psychedelic synthesizers, jazz influences, rhythmic percussion, and alternative rock elements.

With songs like the congo-heavy “Enlazan Las Tinieblas,” sensual and groovy bass-inspired “Voice In My Knives,” and the experimental yet intriguing “Celaje,” the duo shows their expert ability to intertwine different elements to keep their audience engaged and thrilled to hear what’s next. “Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio” reinforces the duo’s knack for creating audible climaxes complete with a cinematic-like ambiance. The album’s focus single is “Cue The Sun,” which is spearheaded by electrifying and hypnotic synthesizers that go perfectly with Bixler-Zavala’s enthralling vocals.

The Mars Volta also announced their upcoming North American 25-city fall tour featuring performances in major cities like Miami Beach, Atlanta, Chicago, Portland, and San Diego. This tour follows their successful nationwide tour with alternative rock band Deftones. Stay up-to-date with the band’s news via their official website.

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. On a mission to “honour our roots and honour our dead”, The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy.

Now –their first new album since their eponymous return in 2022– the duo is back, accompanied by established players such as keyboard-player Marcel Rodríguez-López, bassists Eva Gardner and Joshua Moreau alongside drummers Philo Tsongui and Willy Rodriguez and multi-instrumentalist Leo Genovese. The new album shakes loose some of The Mars Volta’s long-standing shibboleths, fearlessly defying all expectations and categorizations.

Instead, Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos Del Vacio pulses with subtle brilliance, electronic rhythms underpinning sophisticated, turbulent songcraft. This is The Mars Volta at their most mature, most concise, most focused. Their sound and fury channeled to greatest effect, an elaboration upon Rodríguez-López’s subterranean pop melodies driving Bixler-Zavala’s haunting but comforting vocals.
